Liam Gallagher’s son Gene says dad wants Oasis reunion to happen

He and Noel Gallagher’s daughter Anaïs have also talked about staging an intervention for the brothers

Gene Gallagher has opened up about the possibility of an Oasis reunion, saying that his dad Liam wants it to happen.

Speculation about the iconic Britpop band reforming has been brewing over recent years, and came to a head at the start of 2024 as their breakthrough album ‘Definitely Maybe’ marked its 30th anniversary.

While nothing has been officially announced, the members have been adding fuel to the fire when it comes to rumours – each expressing an on-and-off approach to the concept in past interviews.

Now, Liam’s son – and Noel’s nephew – Gene has also weighed in on the debate, and explained in a new interview that his dad is wanting the reunion to come to fruition.

“I get the feeling my dad wants it, too. Let’s hope it happens. It’s easier to speak about after a couple of pints,” the guitarist and songwriter said during a discussion with The Times.

He also denied that he had been sworn to secrecy about the future plans and explained that he’d like to see it take place as much as the next fan.

“It’s nothing to do with me…I mean, will they? I don’t know. I would love it but it’s so beyond my control,” he added, also confirming the he and Noel’s daughter Anaïs have joked about staging an intervention for the brothers, but the two were “too smart for that”.

Gene, whose mother is All Saints singer Nicole Appleton, has also pursued a career in the music industry, and is a part of the indie rock band Villanelle. Earlier this year, they acted as support for Liam for his current run of arena shows, which celebrated the 30th anniversary of ‘Definitely Maybe’.

Since then, the band have announced their debut UK headline tour, kicking off in Glasgow on November 19 and continuing throughout the month. Find remaining tickets here.

Rumours about an Oasis reunion came to a head earlier this summer, when Liam embarked on his aforementioned ‘Definitely Maybe’ anniversary shows, and speculation emerged that Noel would join him on stage.

Before the tour kicked off, Liam shared that Noel turned down an opportunity to reunite for the shows, and even suggested that he would “send him a box of chocolates” as an apology for being “really mean” to him around the time of Oasis’ break-up in 2009.

More recently, Liam told his audience that Noel was “still playing hard to get” regarding a comeback for the band, and also replied to a fan who asked if a reunion of the band is happening next year.

The latter came as the Daily Mirror shared an exclusive report, claiming that the brothers had apparently booked dates for an Oasis reunion at Wembley Stadium this past July, before plans ultimately fell through.

Speculation about a reformation spans much further back than that though. For instance, speaking to NME in 2020, Liam said an Oasis reunion was “gonna happen very fucking soon”, and Noel revealed in early 2023 that he would “never say never” to the idea.

A dampener was soon put on any hopes though, as LG subsequently argued that his older brother had “done a lot of damage to Oasis as a brand”, and Noel claimed that his brother was too much of a “coward” to follow through with the idea, later accusing Liam of trying to “rewrite history” regarding Oasis’ “dreadful” final year together.

Since then, Noel discussed the possibility of an Oasis comeback during an interview with NME, adding that the reason why it hasn’t happened yet was because there had “never really been a serious offer about ‘The Big O’ getting back together”.

Other musicians have weighed in on the debate too. For instance, former Oasis guitarist Bonehead has said that he would like a reunion to go ahead because of what it would mean to the “younger fans” of the band, and Andy Bell – who played bass for the band between 1999 and 2009 – said Oasis would “probably” get back together at some point in the future.

Liam would later respond to Bell’s comments about a potential Oasis return, criticising him for “getting people’s hopes up”. Noel also took aim at Dave Grohl for bringing up the idea of a reunion at this year’s Glastonbury – adding that he told him to “wind his fucking neck in about Oasis”.

While a comeback seems unlikely, and the possibility of the brothers reconciling remains up in the air, the members did recently share a previously unheard version of ‘Up In The Sky’ from their 30th anniversary edition of ‘Definitely Maybe’.
