‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ first reactions hail musical sequel as “movie of the year”

It premiered at the 81st Venice International Film Festival earlier today (September 4)

The first reactions to Joker: Folie à Deux have hailed the Todd Phillips musical sequel with some going as far to say it is the “movie of the year”.

The follow up to 2019’s Joker, which is out on October 4, was premiered at the 81st Venice International Film Festival earlier today (September 4).

While many critics did not comment on the new film ahead of its release, a handful did.

“What a perfomance! What a Story! What a Beauty! What a movie! Lady Gaga and Jaoquin Phoenix Nailed it. Todd Phillips once again prove that he is the best of the best. #JokerFolieADeux deserve everything! What more can i say?? #Joker2 is easily MOVIE OF THE YEAR,” wrote JoBlo Movies and TV.

Ruben Nepales also said despite being a musical, the sequel delivers.

He wrote: “#JokerFolieADeux as a musical? It actually, incredibly works! #JoaquinPhoenix is terrific as a singing #Joker in #ToddPhillips’ big gamble that pays off, thanks to his cast, including #LadyGaga, and the surprising yet perfect and ironic selection of songs. Who knew?”

Lorenzo Ciorcalo also praised Lady Gaga’s performance as Harley Quinn.

He said: “Ok I’ll say this about #JokerFolieADeux without spoilers. It gives continuity to this cinematic universe in a way you don’t expect. It’s all about the ending, wait for it. I need part III ! Gaga is supporting, not lead. But her character is the real deal. You’ll see.”

Hollywood journalist Janet R. Nepales added: “Great performances from @JoaqPhoenix and @ladygaga in JOKER @la_Biennale.”

Scott Menzel also said it will get a lot of people talking.

Yesterday (September 3), a new clip was shared showing Quinn singing ‘Get Happy’ from the 1950 Judy Garland-starring film Summer Stock to Joaquin Phoenix‘s Arthur Fleck.

Last month, director Todd Phillips suggested the Folie à Deux will be the final film in his Joker franchise: “It was fun to play in this sort of sandbox for two movies, but I think we’ve said what we wanted to say in this world.”
