James McAvoy has revealed that elements of his Speak No Evil character was inspired by controversial figure Andrew Tate – see what he had to say below.
In Speak No Evil, McAvoy plays Paddy, the father of a British family with a dark secret. One of the characteristics carried by Paddy is that of toxic masculinity, which the actor has revealed was inspired by Andrew Tate.
McAvoy said to Empire (per Deadline): “The thing I thought I could exploit in the character was, he thinks he’s a bit of a… West Country Andrew Tate.”
He continued: “He’s like, ‘I’m going to teach you what it’s like to be a man again.’ But there’s a sort of polite face on it that isn’t quite Andrew Tate, enough of a sheen of, ‘I’m not one of those guys. Paddy’s challenging you, ‘Do you have a big enough dick to have a drink with me?’, Or, ‘I’m sorry, this is too much for you because you’re not real enough.’”
“Even though Paddy is all masculine and throwing his dick around, he’s just a bit softer,” McAvoy explained. “Almost a Ray Winstone in Sexy Beast vibe: ‘I don’t mind if my belly’s sticking out, because that’s how comfortable a man I fucking am.’”

Speak No Evil – which is an American remake of the 2022 Danish film of the same name – is out in cinemas this month.
Andrew Tate – who has publicly declared that to bring a misogynist – was arrested in December 2022, accused of rape, human trafficking and forming a criminal gang to sexually exploit women. His brother Tristan was also arrested at the same time, as well as two Romanian female suspects. Their home in Romania was once again raided last month, and the two are currently awaiting trial.
In other news, Andrew Tate recently joined controversial rapper French Montana at the latter’s festival performance in Romania in July to promote a podcast episode that they had filmed together. The internet did not react kindly to Tate’s appearance, and condemned French Montana: “This isn’t a good look for French Montana. He’s already a controversial person and he’s still managing to make himself look even worse.”
