Green Day share three songs from deluxe ‘American Idiot’ 20th anniversary reissue

One is a B-side, one is a demo, and one is a live version

Green Day have released three songs from the deluxe 20th anniversary reissue of their seminal album ‘American Idiot’.

Announced last month, the “limited edition super deluxe box sets” of their Grammy Award-winning 2004 record will be released on October 25. Fans will be able to buy the collection on 8LP vinyl and 4CD, with each package also containing two Blu-ray discs.

Additionally, Green Day will drop a limited edition colour vinyl of the original 2LP version of ‘American Idiot’.

Today, they’ve dropped three new tracks – a demo version of ‘Wake Me Up When September Ends’, the B-side ‘Governator’, and a live version of ‘St. Jimmy’ from the band’s VH1 Storytellers performance in 2005.

The deluxe edition of ‘American Idiot’ also contains a brand-new, 110-minute documentary film titled 20 Years Of American Idiot. The other disc features the Heart Like A Hand Grenade movie, which documents “nine months with Green Day” as they record ‘American Idiot’.

Green Day have been performing ‘American Idiot’ in its entirety on their 2024 ‘Saviors’ world tour to celebrate the album’s 20th anniversary.

In a five-star review of the band’s show in Manchester this summerNME wrote: “By the time we reach ‘American Idiot’, Armstrong has hit red-hot form, and the volume seems to have been cranked up a notch. There’s no room for ‘21 Guns’ on this setlist, but the emotional potency of ‘Boulevard Of Broken Dreams’ feels magnified.”

It went on to praise Green Day for “combining class, youthfulness and scruffy punk anthems into a trademark stadium-rock event”.

There’s also a selection of ‘BBC Live’ performances such as tracks from Top Of The Pops and Later… With Jools Holland.

In other news, Green Day side project Pinhead Gunpowder have returned with their first new music for 16 years in the form of ‘Unt’, the lead single from their forthcoming album of the same name. The album is set to drop on October 18.
