Peter Kubik, the founding member and guitarist of Austrian black metal band Abigor, has died at the age of 49.
Kubik’s death was confirmed by the band on social media on Monday (September 2). While an exact cause of death has not been revealed, the band’s post suggest that Kubik died from suicide. They wrote: “PK 1975 – 2024 immortal in his legacy – blood (family), soil (home) and monuments of Black Metal art. walked through the gate by his own hand, through his own will.”

Kubik founded Abigor with drummer-guitarist Thomas Tannenberger in 1993. Tannenberger left the band in 1999 and rejoined Abigor in 2006, leaving Kubik as the longest running member of the band.
Kubik had appeared on all the band’s recorded material to date. They have released a total of 13 studio albums, beginning with 1994’s ‘Verwüstung – Invoke the Dark Age’ and ending with their 2023 effort ‘Taphonomia Aeternitatis (Gesänge im Leichenlicht der Welt)’.
Abigor have also released five EPs between 1995 and 2004, and five demo tapes between 1993 and 1994 prior to their debut album.
Majority of the band’s albums were released by Napalm Records, and helped put the record label on the map in the 1990s, with many regarding Abigor’s first two albums as classic black metal albums.
